The late great Notorious B.I.G.s Fila A13s, a pair of Jordans signed by Spike Lee and platinum plaques for Jay-Zs American Gangster and Run DMCs King of Rock are among the treasures headed to town for this traveling exhibit at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. Sothebys Auction House has opened bidding on its latest Hip Hop collection. According to an Instagram post from the National Hip Hop Museum, the auction is part of Pop Culture Week. As the caption explains, This March, Sothebys is thrilled to present its first ever Pop Culture Week featuring Hip Hop which celebrates the art and objects that have been inspired by and that have in turn inspired contemporary culture. Some rare items include original watercolor illustration entitled "Biggie" by Dan Lish. A quarter-century ago today in Hip-Hop history, Notorious B.I.G. released his second album, Life After Death. Biggie, who was killed two weeks before its release, was nominated for three Grammys for this project: Best Rap Album, Best Rap Solo Performance for Hypnotize, and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for Mo Money Mo Problems. The double LP was released posthumously by Bad Boy Records.
Featuring artists like 112, Jay-Z, Lil Kim, Ma$e, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Too $hort and R. Kelly, along with tracks like Kick In The Door, Whats Beef, Notorious Thugs, Ten Crack Commandments and Skys The Limit, it can be said that Life After Death is one of the greatest rap albums of all time.
